Planning Tips

Heading to The Bear & Tide means stepping off the grid and into the wild — and a bit of preparation goes a long way in making your stay smooth, safe, and unforgettable. Here are some tips to help you plan like a pro:

1. Pack for the Elements

Weather in the Broughton Archipelago can be unpredictable, even in summer. Bring warm layers, a waterproof jacket, and sturdy footwear. Quick-dry clothing is ideal. Don’t forget a cozy toque and socks — even in July!

2. Think Off-Grid

There’s no cell service or Wi-Fi, which is part of the magic. Download anything you might need (maps, playlists, books) before arriving. A headlamp or flashlight with extra batteries is useful.

3. Provisions & Meals

Cabins have fully equipped kitchens including fridge, stove, dishware and a BBQ, but you’ll want to bring groceries and beverages for your stay. There are no stores here so make sure you bring everything you need. If you’ve added a crab or prawn trap add-on to your booking, be sure to bring butter, lemons, and whatever sides you love.

4. Wildlife Wise

You’re in bear country — and it’s incredible. But it also means storing food responsibly and staying alert. We’ll brief you when you arrive, but if you’re curious beforehand, we’re happy to share best practices. Bear spray, bear bells and air horns are provided in each cabin.

5. Travel Light (but Smart)

You’ll arrive by boat or floatplane, so avoid overpacking bulky gear. If you have specific activity gear (like binoculars, fishing rods, or sketchbooks), bring it along. And don’t forget your bug spray!

6. Ask Us Anything

Whether it’s how to prepare for a foggy morning paddle or what kind of coffee grinder is in the cabin — we’re happy to help. Just reach out before your trip and we’ll make sure you’re ready to unwind without a hitch.
